    New Windows Defender Offline Beta

A new offline Defender version, similar to the one native to Windows 8, is available.
It's a tool you can boot from to clean any infection without using the OS boot.

This could be a useful tool to have in our security arsenals. Thanks Rui.

Wonder how it compares with the Microsoft Stand Alone Security Sweeper? That one detects and removes some rootkits as weel as normal malware.

That's a good question, Jerry and I don't have an answer. Regarding Defender, MS says this on the FAQ:

"Windows Defender Offline Beta helps protect your PC by scanning it to remove rootkits and other advanced malware that can't always be detected by antimalware programs. If this type of malware is detected on your PC, you'll be prompted in Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender to download and run Windows Defender Offline Beta."

So this one will deal with rootkits too. I wonder if this is the next generation app, since this Defender is similar to the one used in Windows 8.

After I loaded the Windows Defender app to my Flash Drive, I added my other apps back onto the Flash Drive (PC Decrapifier, Nirsoft Utilities, my delete scareware apps, Super Antispyware, etc. ) This will become a pretty good drive for cleaning. I'll have to decide what else to include.
