    Excel problem (2000 SR1)

I have a strange problem with an Excel (Office 2000) installation. Once in Excel, you can't do much other than edit. If you try to do a Save, or a Save As, or right-click on the toolbar and select Customize nothing happens. Word seems to function OK in this regard.

I've tried uninstalling Office and re-installing.

At one point it was giving me messages about insufficient disk space or memory. There are more than 3 GB free on the disk, so that's not the problem. I checked all the temporary directory paths several times, to make sure they all pointed to valid directories. I haven't seen one of those messages in a while; it just doesn't do anything when I try to Save, even if I just enter the program and click Save--I'm not prompted for a file name or anything.

If I try to exit, it asks if I want to save, I click yes, and it goes right back to asking me if I want to save. And again, when you right-click on a toolbar and click Customize nothing happens. Yet I can get to the customize toolbar menu in Word just fine.

There's something going on that seems to be limited to Excel. Any ideas for other things to try??

    Re: Excel problem (2000 SR1)

Have you had this problem since first installation or did it arise subsequently. ?

In the meantime ttry the following :

    1. Find the XLStart sub directory and see if it contains any files.
    2. Move (i.e. remove then fromn the XLStart directory) those files to an alternate directory and resart Excel.
    3. If that helps, re-introduce the files you moved until the problem occurs again. You will then know the source of the problem.

If none of the above helps try Start, Run and enter the following command :<pre> excel.exe /regserver</pre>

    Wasim,

<< excel.exe /regserver >> when run starts Excel with the /regserver swtch which cause Excel to rewrite all it's registry settings. Excel then quits.

See MS KB article <A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q211/4/81.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=regserver&rnk=3&src=DHCS_MSPSS_g n_SRCH&SPR=XLW>Q211481</A> for more on startup switches for Excel 2000.

Holding the Shift key while (double) clicking the Excel icon prevents any add-ins *and* xlstart files from loading as well. Excel does complain that you cannot open them for editing, but they do not load.
