Copy and paste stopped functioning in Vista

I would be grateful if someone could tell me how I can recover my copy and paste facility on Windows Vista.

It has been working all along and for some reason has stopped functioning.

If this is a result of having applied patches try using System restore back to a time when it was working.

Have you added or changed any programs recently?

Have you added or changed any hardware recently?

    Copy and Paste

Thanks. I did load a few software programs recently.

I have never used system restore before. So I called it up and it says no restore points have been created on your computer's system disc.

If you want to share what the programs are someone here may have experience with them.

You may have to uninstall one at a time until you find the culprit.

    Create one! Now!
    Very important safety feature.

Go to Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.

I have now created a system restore point.
I also deleted a few programmes which were installed recently.
I am still unable to copy and paste.
I noticed under 'windows services' there is no feature relating to clipboard and wondered if that could be a factor.

Do all methods of calling copy/paste fail? (Edit menu, right click, ctrl c, ctrl v).

Try creating a different user in the administrative group. If copy/paste works there, follow the instructions here:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

    T
he instructions are for Windows 7 but should work for Vista.

Try running SFC /scannnow in an administrative command window.

To check for malware, run malwarebytes .

    Thanks for your help Jerry
I created a new user and the copy and paste worked there on a different browser
I was able to run SFC/scannow It got as far as 79% complete but a message came up - Windows resource protection could nn.ot perform the requested operation.
    What do you think?

Try running sfc /scannow in safe mode.
Was the copy/paste loss only failing in a specific browser? Does it work elsewhere?
You might also want to do a chkdsk /r to make sure you don't have disk corruption.

When in safe mode I cannnot access the guest user which would allow me to run the scan as administrator.
the copy/paste works in my wordprocessor in guest user account but doesn't work at all in my own user account.
I ran chkdsk and it was okay.

Thanks for your advice - Tom

Try accessing the hidden Vista Administrator account:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/

and running SFC /scannow from there.

If you are happy with the way the new user account works, you can make it your default account by following the instructions here:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

I ran SFC in safe mode under administrator with the same result - 79% complete and same message came up
Now I find right click is not working.

I've run out of ideas. Unless someone else has a better idea, it would seem the only options left are a repair install (you need a Windows install disk at the same service pack level as your PC or else uninstall service packs to match the install disk) or a clean new install. Be sure to back up your data before installing.

    Anyone any ideas.
I can't copy and paste in the new user account and the right click button isn't working at all now.
