Replaced the HDD on my notebook. Would like to download from MS a copy of windows 7 64bit Home Premium and activate it with the key off my Acer. Is this possible and how?

Hi and welcome to the Lounge.

If you have an external backup drive, one option to get your laptop right as you had it before the disk replacement, would be to use an imaging backup app, such as the free Macrium Reflect, to create an image of your old drive in that external backup drive. Once that done, you could simply replace the hard drive and use the imaging software boot disk to boot the laptop and restore the image to the new drive.

If this is not an option, you can download a Windows ISO image from here:

If you want to add it with SP1 already installed, you can get it from here:

Each of these can be downloaded and burned to a DVD.

One question that you need to consider is whether the OEM key you have will work with this download. I cannot guarantee that it will.

    replaced HDD reinstall windows

    Thanks for the response.
The old HDD is not accessible, broken. Starting from scratch. No installation disk available so far to beg, steal or borrow either.
Never tried using Windows ISO image, can you enlighten me please?

You need to download the file and then use an appropriate tool to write it to a DVD. Once the process is complete, you will have a legitimate Windows installation DVD. Now, what operating system are you using on the computer where you will be downloading the ISO file?

After you download the file, insert a DVD on your DVD writer, right click your ISO file, choose Open With and then pick Windows Disc Image Burner.

Once the burning is complete, you can boot from the DVD and setup Windows 7. If you need help doing that, let me know.
