    Changing Hyperlinks in a Document (97 SR2)

I have a user who has made a document that contains a bunch of hyperlinks. He uses this doc as an index. We have changed our server, and need to edit each hyperlink so it points to the new server. I know how to do this individually, but how can I change it globally in the document. He has abou 100 links. I tried through Replace, but this doesn't work.

How do I explain this you you? Well, the hyperlink might say, SOP Manual 13456, but the hyperlink is for fsh67vol 3data.. and I need to change it to fs79vol1data...

    Does this make sense?

    Hi MelanieB,

If you show field codes, you can run your find and replace on the hyperlinks. Go to Tools > Options > View Tab > turn Field Codes on.

    HTH,

    Chris

    Hi Melanie:

You can use replace. It depends upon the actual construction of your path.
    Use wildcards
Find: (hyperlink plus whatever won't change)(*)(whatever won't change)

Replace All: 1"new information that changed"3

Note: In replace, do not include quotes. I did that so you could see what I've added. This should find text in your hyperlink fields and change it. You must have field codes (Alt+F9) turned on.

    Hope this helps

Thanks. This project has gotten pretty big. I have discovered that every document has a ton of links, and each link links to a document that has more links. It's a quagmire/web of links that befuddles me to even think about it. I don't suppose you know of any existing macro/code that I can modify that will follow these links and update them automatically? I do not know VB at all, so I would have to have specific directions for modifying it. (probably dreaming, aren't I?)

Are these documents HTML? If so, it would seem to make sense to move them out of Word into a web site management application. If they are all Word docs, then it seems the VBA approach could be as follows:

    (1) Request user confirmation of general information about the path changes
    (2) Swoop through the document and update each link with the general path information, then verify the presence of the file; if it's there, move on, but if it isn't
