XP Pro Shutdown & unwanted immediate Restart

When I choose SHUTDOWN the menu the system shuts down and immediately RESTARTS Windows...
In order to literally turn the machine off, I have to hold the power button down for 8 seconds...obviously not a normal shutdown...
I've checked power settings through the control panel and everything there is ok...
I'm at a loss of what to do next...
    thanks in advance...

You've cleared the "Automatically restart" check box?

    Did you get a BSOD?

Is there nothing in the event logs?

    Shutdown auto Restart

Yes cleared box ... It wasnt set to begin with ...
No BSOD ... Just shutdown and auto restart ...
Had one event but i deleted the referenced file and have no other events at present...
If there was a way to log each step through the whole process maybe i could catch something ...
    I appreciate the input...

    Very interesting...
I just read the referenced document...
    This might just work...
I'm going to read some more detail and make sure I understand it...
Then do a good backup and give it a shot...
    Thanks very much...
