Any statement that begins with a "#" is a description correct and the 127.0.0.1 are the ones that will be blocked?

So if I want to add to this list I can add a line that begins with a "#" and anything lines after that and begin with

127.0.0.1 will be blocked.

Any line that begins with # is treated as a comment and ignored.

If you want to add other entries to your hosts file it should be like this

#my entries
127.0.0.1 x.com
127.0.0.1 y.com

I seem to remember that Spybot - Search & Destroy used to have (maybe still has, for those who still use it) a HOSTS feature of this type to nullify any attempts to access URLs which it considered to be bad, and thousands and thousands were so classified. Unfortunately it took a long time for the PC to wade through the HOSTS file every so often, so it ended up being more trouble than it was worth...

Don't forget to Wrote Protect the hosts file so rogue ware cannot change it. In addition to blocking sites by using 127.0.0.1, you can direct any URL to any IP address. For example

127.0.0.1 google.com

will redirect requests from your browser to go to Google, to be sent to your machine. So malware could use your hosts file to redirect requests for legitimate sites to be redirected to their choice of web site.
