    Laptop won't recognize cd/dvd drive

My daughter's laptop has deleted the driver for the CD/DVD drive, and I think it happened after an automatic Windows 7 update. when we put a music or video disk in the drive, it spins (machine is trying to read it) but then after 60-90 seconds nothing happens. The drive doesn't appear in the Device Manager, and I'm not sure how to get it back. I have a spare drive which I swapped in, just in case it was a hardware failure, but still nothing happens. Anyone have some suggestions to try? Thank you. (HP Pavilion DV2615NR, Windows 7)

    TWFJOM,
Hello....Does the CD\DVD RW show up using Windows Explorer...If so open "Disk Management" Maybe you just need to reassign a drive letter. Regards Fred

    TWFJOM,

What I always do after an update messes with the CD/DVD drive in both my Dell Desktop & Dell Laptop is to go into Device Manager, uninstall the CD/DVD drive, ReBoot...solves the problem for me every time...YMMV.

Okay, this Microsoft Mr. Fixit link worked! Thank you so much!
Ironically, I brought the laptop into a shop today (which I've satisfactorily used a handful of times before) and the technician told me it was "probably" not fixable, and the easiest work-around was to buy an external drive. I guess I'll ask for a different technician from now on! (At least he didn't charge me for the hr+ of his time)
Again, thanks from me and my daughter!

Hello Retired Geek - thanks for the suggestion, but one of the problems was that there was no drive in the Device Manager to uninstall! There is now though, but it's finally working, so I'll keep this in my back pocket for the next time!

Just thought I would related my experience for others who come across this post later on. In the middle of a trip my laptop suddenly didn't see the DVD drive any more. Turns out that while josteling around in my backpack that the drive somehow came loose and unplugged itself; visually the DVD drive was poking out only about a millimeter or two from the side of the laptop. I powered off the laptop, popped out and reseated the DVD drive, powered back on and was good to go.
