    Windows Offline Defender

Per Woody's latest column, I downloaded the WOD to a CD and tried to run it by inserting disk upon new bootup. However, did not get the "Welcome Screen" and nothing further happened. In other words, it didn't run. Any suggestions as to how to solve this?

You need to have the disk insert before you start the boot and make sure that you BIOS is configured to boot from the CD before the HD.

Gotta be the Bios setting, assuming the file was burned to disk correctly.

Does the download create a bootable CD, or will I need to use a 'make a bootable CD' option in my burning software (Nero)?

    A1ex,

The download is just a setup program. When run it will create the bootable CD/USB.
I just downloaded the 64 bit version, loaded a USB drive and ran a scan which took 2:45 on my main desktop.
    It found nothing, whew!
I also noted in the download process that it uses the same filename as the old StandAlone System Sweeper so it is safe to say this it SSS's replacement.

FYI: The USB drive shows as WDO_Media64 in Windows Explorer.
Note: The program will no longer fit on a 256Mb USB drive as the old SSS did! I know the install screen says you need 250Mb but that's a true 250Mb {1024x1024x250 =262,144,000}not the 256Mb {256x1000x100=256,000,000} they use in the marketing ans sizing of drives these days it's 1024*1024*256 = 268,435,456 bytes makes a big difference!

Downloaded defender offline 64bit and tried to run it when rebooted. It completed loading and when I chose quick scan it got as far 4949 files and stopped and did nothing for over 10 minutes till I exited to restart comp. Did same thing with the previous system sweeper disc and completed with no problems (didn't find anything so hope that means comp OK).
Also I will not connect to internet during offline so cannot check for updates.

    Curious,

It worked flawlessly on my desktop as I posted above. However, on my laptop it also stalled. I wiggled the mouse, hit a few keys & did a Ctrl+Shift+Esc and it restarted somewhere along the line. It stalled a second time and I did the same and it responded and then ran to conclusion. Don't know why I had the LT plugged in so it wasn't a power issue and the power saving features shouldn't have been running since it was booted from a USB Key.

I moved this thread to the BETA forum as WDO is beta software. As such, it is subject to change before official release and we do not want to muddy the waters once released with information only pertinent to the beta.

    Thumbs up Windows Offline Defender

Thanks to all for the help. Had to start from a cold boot rather than a restart
    it then worked.

    another windows defender problem

I created a Windows Defender 32 bit CD on Jan 6 after reading Woody Leonhard's article.

After restarting my system with the CD, I got these error messages [approximately]
1] "update file is out of date"
    2] error in updating file

Of course I can not update a CD, but I should have gotten the correct updated file
when I created the CD in the first place.

I could start over to try to get that up-to-date file, but before that, I would like to see if anyone has some suggestions.

    Thanks a lot.

    BCMike,

Welcome to the lounge as a poster.

I'd like to suggest you use a USB Thumb Drive for this program, of course your PC/Laptop needs to support booting from USB devices. The reason for this is any malware detection program is going to need updates and thus needs to be able to write to the device/media to store those updates. Although you could use a CD or DVD R/W disk this would be cumbersome at best IMHO. Again Welcome.

Not sure how many people are having this problem, but I can't get the defintions to update, either on a WDO installation on CD or on USB key. WDO isn't smart enough to explain why: for example, if it was unable to connect to the internet.
Anyway, if anyone has had issues with this after an update attempt: "0x80072f76 Couldn't install the definition updates", feel free to post your resolution here.

Tired of wasting my time with MS lab experiments...
