Macro to Add/ Remove Personal Folders (Outlook 2000)

    Hi,

Does anyone know if it is possible to write a macro which can Add (and Remove) Personal Folders ?

I'd like to do this so as to refine my PST backup regime. Currently I have a batch file which copies my PSTs to a temp directory on the local disk before copying to the network. (I use this two stage approach on the basis that the local copy will be much quicker than the network copy and whilst I'm copying I shouldn't open Outlook because it'll lock the PSTs.)

I thought the process could be improved by having two macros; 'Add all PSTs' and 'Remove all PSTs'. I would run the 'Remove all PSTs' macro when I exit OL so that when I next open it there are no PSTs thus allowing me access to my Inbox etc. while the PST backup is running. When the PST backup has completed it's first stage (the local copy) I would then run the 'Add all PSTs' macro.

Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received.

for some reason, i think it's not exposed in the object model but a reg file might work.

However... the pst is not released as soon as it's removed. It can take as long as 30 min for outlook to release the pst.

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm not familiar with what you mean by "a reg file" - could you explain please.

Because I run my batch file before starting OL I don't think the delayed release will cause a problem - at least that's my theory.

    TIA

As MaryJ suggests, doing a file copy could be problematic within Outlook. But it sounds like a great application for batch files, maybe WinScript, and/or a scheduling utility.

it's a registry file you use to change the registry.

if you are using the batch before outlook starts, why do you need to remove the psts from the profile?

i used to use a batch to copy the pst for backup then start outlook and it worked well. (i now use a more complete backup solution for the entire drive)

    I think a faster computer would be the better solution. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

How about this: create a second profile that contains no PSTs, and use that to browse your Inbox. When the backup is completed, exit OL and restart with the other profile. This way, you would not risk messing up your main profile by removing and re-adding components every day.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

As suggested I've now created another profile without the PSTs and it works a treat.

    Thanks again.
