A speculative "Microsoft PR" story totally devoid of evidence.

How is it determined that users are 'bailing out of XP'? Granted there are sales of Windows 7 with new PCs, laptops and netbooks - because that's the only Windows PC operating system you get on the hard disk now! And as time passes, more users will move towards the newer operating system. Surprise.

Yes, it's a pretty diagram with lots of numbers - but again absolutely no information about how they were acquired.

Two things..... Fred, why don't you just post the picture? I can't open those thumbnails....not just yours, but any of them.

I use FF too, but don't get that message, "Contains unauthenticated content". The site opens normally.
I just don't agree with the idea that people are flocking to Win-7 from XP. That's baloney.

But, among my hundreds of PC customers, NO-One is jumping on the Win-7 bandwagon.
The only time a person gets Win-7 is when they buy a new computer and then it's not a choice.
Most people take one look at Win-7 and ask me if there's some way that I can install Windows XP
for them. Of course, I say "NO!". But I do all I can to make Win-7 look and act like XP.
Like, to install the "Classic Shell", Disable UAC, Take Ownership, etc.

I find that most users are agnostic when it comes to operating systems. As long as it still works, most users don't have a compelling reason to spend $90 or more to switch. Vista and windows 7 also have increased hardware requirements that either add additional cost or preclude updating at all. So most users don't upgrade until they get a new PC. What the chart indicates to me, is that it shows the slow death of older hardware.

Stats like this can be interpreted in many ways!

A broadband blog I frequent has released various stats about the usage of said blog, this one is interesting

    Of windows users:
    58% use Windows 7
    30% still use XP
    10% use Vista
    Source for the above.

Does that suggest people on there are more likely to upgrade hardware?

Also what could be interesting is if the site staff could produce a breakdown of O/S usage etc for this site!

The vast majority of retail customers have only changed OSes when a new PC is purchased. Upgraders are a very small percentage of the user base.

Exactly as above, its not like consumers get a choice....hmmm, lets see, the new computer with Win 7 on it or the new computer with XP on it...what! Waddayamean there's no new computers with XP on it...what? Haven't been for years!?

The stats are garnered from "website visitors", so already the metric is slanted to online users only.
In the Music business there are MANY MANY MANY (again I say!) musicians who use XP PC's in complete isolation - no internet connection, no updates, no AV software.
They have been solid workhorses for years, and will be until the hardware burns out!
But they won't show up on any stat-scraping sites.......
