"My Recent Documents" links are stored in "Documents and Settings(username)My Recent Documents".

Navigate to that folder. Select all, or some of the entries, and delete them.

Download Windows XP Power Toys from windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install TweakUI.
Open TweakUI from Control Panel, click Paranoia tab and check Clear Document History At Logon, then OK.
You'll not have a problem with My Recent Documents anymore.
Note: If you don't see the link to Windows XP Power Toys on your Windows Update web page, your computer doesn't run Windows XP.

Re: clear my recent documents

I have installed PowerToys on my XP machine, but do not see a "Paranois" tab. In fact, the interface is a TreeView style, not tabs. Has this feature been removed? Any ideas?

Yeah, the XP version of TweakUI is missing the "paranoia" tab. You can still clear items, of course - but not the same way. Is there something in particular that you wanted to do that would normally have been on the paranoia tab?

Isn't this what you're looking for: Right-click on the taskbar, select Properties. Click the Start Menu and then Customize. There should be an entry there to let you clear the Documents selection.

You can turn off the Recent documents by using TweakUi and clearing the check mark at "Allow Recent Documents on Start Menu".
To clear the history just add a check mark to the "Clear document history on exit" and this will clear the documnet history evry time you log off off or reboot.

You might want to look into X-Cleaner at http://www.spy-gadgets.com/index-ov.htm . It does what you want plus so much more.

The simplest way, Franr, is to right-click on the 'start' button, select 'Properties', click on 'Start Menu' tab, click 'Customize' button, click 'Advanced' tab, click 'Clear List' button. If you don't want any 'Recent Documents' to appear, remove the checkmark in 'List my most recently opened documents'.

Bruce,
If one is using the "Classic Start Menu" then this selection is not there, one needs to use TweakUI .
