    Copy/Paste in Same Folder

A new and improved feature of Windows 7 is that when files are copied and pasted into the same folder, the copy file name is the name of the original with "- Copy" which makes it difficult to select just originals or copies.

For example: original file named "Contract-102.docx" copy is named "Contract-102 - Copy.docx

In Windows XP the word "Copy" was at the beginning of the file name. How do I get this rule changed to the Windows XP format?

Don't think you can, but there are a few freeware tools than might help. To just select the files with "- Copy" in them I would user the free "Everything Search Tool" from Voidtools, handy for all sorts of things. If your files where in C:\Files\Docs\Excel you could search *Excel\*- Copy* and it would just show you the copies, which you can select and move or delete.

You could also use the BatchRename tool, select all the files, and say set it to append Copy to the front of all files that contain "- Copy"

Just a few work arounds anyway, I'm sure there are others!

    Cheers,

    Nathan

Or teach/discipline yourself to paste into a "copy" folder instead of the same folder; it can even be a subsidiary folder so its remains with the parent.

Plain old Windows 7 search works with the "- Copy" files.
To find the originals, search for - Copy. (The minus sign means "except" in this context.)
To find the copies, search for "- Copy". (Enclosing the search string in quotes makes it seearch for the literal string minus-sign Copy.)
