vertical line in report (97 SR2)

Tried in vain to create a vertical line between columns in a multicolumned report. Must tell you that I am not a developer and do not use VBA in Access--just know how to create reports and manipulate them to look as I want, except for this one. Suggestions!!

Have you tried using the line drawing tool on the Access toolbar? The trick with it is to draw a vertical line exactly the same height as your detail section (assuming you don't have a bunch of grouping headers and footers - if so you may want them there too). That should give you the effect your are after.

Can any of your text boxes grow? If not, just draw the vertical lines (hold down shift as you're drawing to constrain them to the vertical). If your text boxes can grow, then it gets a tad more complicated because normal lines (as well as boxes) don't grow. You will need to use VBA to make vertical lines that stretch automatically.

No, none of the text boxes grow. I tried the line drawing tool and used the shift , but no line appeared. This is in the detail part of the report. Thanks. I will try again. Libbie

I was using the line drawing tool. But I will try again and be careful to draw it exactly the same height as you suggest. thanks, Libbie

You may want to try the line drawing commands in VBA. You can use them to draw lines of any width and length and to start them at any position on the printed page (not just in the detail section). I use this to draw vertical lines that extend from the column headings to the bottom of the page, regardless of where the last detail line on the page was printed. Look for help on LineDraw.

Thanks, I will investigate this, but I am not sure where to begin. Do I open a module and then experiment? As you can tell, I do not know anything about using VBA in Access, but I will check out my books on Access. Libbie

Re: vertical line in report (97 SR2)

When you used the word "columns" did you mean a data field, or do you mean snaking columns like you can do by specifying the number of columns on the Page Setup command. If the later, and you are trying to separate those columns with a vertical line, then chances are the line is being drawn outside the print area for the column. In that case, Access doesn't print anything, and it's quite evident when you do a print preview. Hope this is helpful.

Wendell, it was the latter and I just tried moving my line closer to the text box in the detail and voila! A dotted line separating the columns! Thanks for your help. Libbie

It really is kinda fun to solve these perplexing, frustrating little problems isn't it! <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>
