64 bit versus 32 bit processors

I am thinking of buying a new processor and noticed on the Amazon UK site that they subdivide their processor list into 64 and 32 bit versions. What is the difference between them. Is it connected to whether the user has a 64 or 32 bit Windows system?

I guess this is probably a stupid question, but advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards, Roy

In order to utilize a 64 Bit system you would need a 64 Bit processor. Your entire PC could be 64 Bit compatible but if the CPU is 32 Bit, guess what, your PC will be a 32 Bit PC.

Wikipedia has an explanation for 64 Bit processors.

Most, if not all of your latest processors will be 64 bit compatible without the adverts. I find it strange that they would
advertise in that way. Can you provide a link to the exact site? I'm not seeing it on my search of the Amazon UK site.

If you are faced with the decision of which processor architecture to get yourself, always go with the 64 bit as they will run 32 bit just as well.

Hi Ted and CLiNT and thank you both.

CLiNT, I could have sworn that when I went to the Amazon UK site and searched for processors there was an option on the left of the screen to look at either 32 or 64 bit versions. However, I can't find it now. Having said that, if you search for 32 bit versions and then 64 bit versions different results are shown. Leaving that aside, the processor I am thinking of buying is the Intel Sandybridge i7-2600K Unlocked Core i7 Quad-Core Processor (3.4 GHz, 8 MB Cache, Socket 1155) for GBP 234.94. What else would I have to update or purchase to be able to use that processor?

    Advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards, Roy

Just make sure your motherboard is socket 1155. Also make sure you have a very good cooling system as these can run quite hot. Corsair do a very good sealed water cooling unit (H50,H60 H70,H80 & H100 worth a look, I use the H60 and it keeps my CPU temp below 45 on load 32 idle). Although there are some very good air coolers also.

I can vouch for the Corsair H80 liquid CPU cooler, very decent stock temps and easy to install.
With the above type of setup your stock running temps will be significantly improved, unless you OC & have a brick of copper sitting on your CPU.
It looks like your Asus P8P67 PRO will support that processor, but check with the Asus site to ensure your BIOS version supports it.
Otherwise download the latest BIOS, if needed.
The i7-2600K looks like a very decent processor, and priced not too badly either, and it will support both 32 and 64 bit operating systems.

    Hi CLiNT and thanks.

I am puzzled by your reference to "your Asus P8P67 Pro" motherboard because I don't have that at present, although that's the one I intend to buy. How did you know-long range telepathy?

    Please advise.

    Thanks and regards,Roy

I think the gray at our temples makes us more telepathic. Either that or we become good guessers. Actually I believe Clint actually saw that Clive uses that MB.
