    Shared Spreadsheet (W2k & Off 2k Pro)

At the office we created a spreadsheet (excel) for manpower scheduling. It was created a long time ago using Off 95. It has since been upgraded to Off 97 (and soon to be moved to a machine running Off 2k). It is not a very big file. Many people need access to this file in our office LAN. There is no server, only peer network. The file resides on one of the machines. Everyone has a shortcut to the file. The problem is that since upgrading most of the office comptuer to Win2K & Off 2k, this file opens V e r y S l o w l y. There are no macros running in the spreadsheet. Does anyone have an idea how to speed up the access time to this spreadsheet ? It sometimes takes up to 95 seconds to open it ! Thanks, TimC

Are you having similar delays in using the FileOpen window if you try and open it manually?

Since you're on O2K Pro, have you considered importing the worksheet file into Access? This will be much faster.

Well, I solved the problem. Turns out the person who designed the workbook was not too savy. They had calculations for dates at the top of each worksheet. Since the file was resident on another computer, anyone on the network opening the workbook caused the workbook to re-calculate all the dates (over a year's worth) every time. Since there was multiple opens, everyone saw a slow down. Also, each time a person changed an item in the workbook, it would re-calculate again. For some, the time was over 5 minutes. To end this "story"...I copied the format and information (without the calculating dates) and put it in a new workbook. I then placed the workbook on a better machine (running Win2K) and sent new shortcuts to everyone. Now the workbook opens in a couple of seconds. Everyone is now happier.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I will have to try the Access trick down the line.
