tries to print to FAX when default printer is HP Deskjet

Trying to help Mom figure out why her PC wants to print to fax. If we change it to HP, it prints ok. But next time she tries to print something, it shows Fax in the printer box, almost like fax is the default printer. In control panel I verified that her HP is default printer. Scratching my head on this one. I removed the HP and rebooted and the HP installed properly. Still wants to Fax. Any suggestions. It's probably something obvious but I'm stumped. This just started a few days ago.

I assume you mean by In Control Panel the Devices and Printers section.

    Devices and Printer.jpg

If this is not what you are talking about then try Right Click on the printer and selet Make Default.

Yes Ted, I verified that the HP printer was the default printer in printers and devices. I am baffled why the print dialog box has fax as the default. It just doesnt make sense to me.

When she uses Ctrl+P does she get something similar to this:

    Printer.jpg

Is the default printer selected by default? Or is the Fax selected? Not sure why the printer is not selected, but it is a simple thing to change to the printer.

Have you actually downloaded the proper drivers from HP or just let Windows load drivers after removing the printer. Might want to try downloading the drivers and appropriate software from HP.

If you never want to use fax you can remove it in devices and printers that way it is not available for it to be chosen.

Thanks for the suggestions Ted and Clive. Ted, once again, the HP Deskjet is the default printer, but the Fax is the suggested printer in the dialog box when she tries to print. It prints on the HP if she goes in the printer field in the print dialog box and changes it to the HP, but that is a workaround, and it bothers me that I can't solve the mystery. I hope her registry isn't corrupted.
Clive, I actually considered removing the fax and may very well end up doing that.....Ernie
