    Video Tape to PC software...

I found an old digital video camera ( Canon ZR500) together with its' power cable and ieee1394 cable. When I charged it & then opened it, I found a tape in it. It is a small DV tape. The video goes back about six years and I would like to copy it to my computer.

The pc I have that has a IEEE1394 card in it is an old Dell4550 desktop running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.

When I plugged the cable into the card, the message on the screen said it was looking for Pinnacle which is no longer on the machine or anywhere to be found.

Is there freeware software that I can download that will copy the tape onto my harddrive?
    Thanks,
    Jack

I would use Windows Explorer to browse over to the camera and copy the video from there.

Once you plug in the camera it should show as another drive.

I did that and although the camera shows up as a device under My Computer, nothing shows up when I double-click the icon for Canon DV Camcorder. Thanks anyway.
But I did find Windows Movie Maker under the Accesories folder on this pc, so I am all set because I am sure that will work...

Windows movie maker may not see the file.

I use Format Factory for most of that stuff.
It's free and you can load and convert movies from and into any format you like.
You can browse to the camera from that and load the video.
    Easy to use also
