    no cd/dvd drive

Install of Win 8 CP went smooth but I cannot find my dvd drive. Went into bios and changed boot sequence to boot from hard drive first instead of cd hoping that would help but no go. Any ideas?

Did you look in device manager? By default windows explorer will not show empty drives (no cd or dvd in the drive)

    Hey All,

I've got a similar problem. My Win 8 CP installation sees the DVD/ROM drive but not the CD/RW drive. I've tried having the system scan for new HW w/o luck. When I had XP installed both drives worked fine. FYI: This machine is Dual Boot with Ubuntu 10-12 and it doesn't see either drive but I still have more investigation to do on that problem. As a side note I tried using SIW to see if it would report the drive but the Home Free version will not run on Win 8 Home Priemum as it reports. Speecy works but does not see the CD/RW either.

Update: I just tried putting disks in the drive while in Ubuntu and it immediately recognized both drives, so no problem there.

I wonder if Win 8 is not loading drivers for the unseen drive. Have you tried manually installing drivers? Just a thought.

Here's a thought. XP is 32 bit, My Ubuntu is 32 bit, my Win 8 CP is 64 bit {same machine fairly old Dell 9100 with Intel Pentium 4 630 and 3Gb Dual Channel DDR2 @332 MHz}. I checked the Windows 7 compatiblity list for my TSSTcorp TS-H292B CD/RW drive and guess what NOT there in either 32 or 64 bit lists. Drivers, Drivers...my kingdom for a 64 bit driver.

That has got to be the problem. You do need the same bitness drivers as the OS. You may be you know what out of luck my friend.

I am dual booting Win 8 64bit along with Win 7 HP 64 bit. 7 has never had a problem recognizing the drive. Cannot install the drivers in Win 8 as it does not see the drive. Still works fine in Win 7.
The drive does not appear in device manager or disk management in Win 8 but I know it's in there somewhere. Guess I'll just have to wait and see if microsoft fixes this. Wanted to install some apps from cd/dvd but otherwise it isn't that big of an issue.

    Thanks,
    Rich

Rich, Have you tried to find drivers at the manufacturer's web site? There may be some 64 Bit drivers that Win 8 CP does not possess.
