failure of programs to run and/or load Win 7 X64

I cannot get windows update to run and several other programs such as turbotax and family tree maker will not run and when i tried to reload them i get a fatal error message and troubleshooting does not yield any thing also Carbonite will not not run. all these ran just fine a few months ago I cannot be sure which windows patch Tuesday caused all the trouble. I deleted Net4 and reloaded no effect on problem all virus, spyware and malware scans were clean and registry cleanups have not helped [Jv16 and glary] . I am considering a win 7 re install but do not have a win7 DVD [not supplied with the gateway allinone]. I just downloaded the iso for win7 x64 Sp1 and have it on DVD. will that work for a non destructive win 7 cleanup? a la fred Lange and the instructions found in the lounge postings.

It should work just fine. Use the DVD and your original key. Worth a try. If it does not work, a reinstall might have to be done. After this, look into Imaging. Read about these great restoration apps in the Security and Backup forum.

What are the exact errors you receive on the install?
Do you get errors when you run the programs? If yes, what error?
What happens with Windows Update? An error? Which one?

Have you checked the Event Logs?

    response to questions

no errors messages event logs do not provide a clue so far. when I clink on windows update nothing happens.

when i click on carbonite nothing happens

when i try to load turbotax nothing happens

when i try to load family tree maker nothing happens

circle rotates for a while and stops

there are other indicators of malaise i haven't written them done messages that say something is not

many control panel items do not load when selected can't change resolution for example

system restore only goes back one month

    can't personalize desktop

all of these things worked in december.

i haven't tried the win 7 reinstall yet

    sfc /scannow

If the above could fix your operating system functionality you might then regain functionality of your programs
by uninstalling those that fail, cleaning up, then reinstalling.

Otherwise the non destruct repair install option would be needed along with the removal of the failing apps.

You will first need to scan the system with more than one independant AV/AM app, preferably in safemode, to rule out an infectious etiology behind all of this.

I recommend drive imaging after all is said and done.
