    PDF pages will not open

    Win7/IE9/Adobe Reader 10.1.2: I cannot open or download PDF files from Internet sites. My Win XP with IE8 and Adobe Reader 10.1.2 works just fine. I think that I have checked all the different setting. I have even uninstalled Adobe Reader and down loaded new from adobe site. The Reader will open PDF files that I have download before this problem. I am looking for a little help in solving this problem.

    Welcome to the lounge as a new poster!

    IMHO I'd ditch Adobe Reader in favor of either Foxit Reader or Nitro Reader {my current favorite}. Both work very well, are faster loading than Adobe, don't invade your system as much, don't use as many resources, and are less prone to virus attacks.

    Earle, Welcome to the Lounge.

    Have you attempted a 3rd party PDF reader to ascertain your setup is at fault. I use PDF-XChange Viewer in place of Adobe Reader in most instances.

    What happens when you try to download a file? An error? Which one?

    No error message, just a blank page. I have tried Nitro and PDF Xchange. Same thing happens. I uninstalled all the PDF programs and tried each one by itself. I made sure each .pdf extension was associated with the installed program. Nothing would open a PDF file, like my end of month Bank Statement.

    If you only get blank PDFs at a secure site like a bank using https://, then it's likely that you need to use Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, Security (sixth settings section), to uncheck Do not save encrypted pages to disk.

    Thanks all, the last help from Bruce solved my problem, also I did leave the PDF Xchange program installed.

    Earle, that is a bug in Adobe Reader X that shows up in some windows 7 machines using IE9. The adobe patch is:

    Another work-around is to go into Adobe's preferences on the Internet tab and UNcheck "Open PDF in browser."

    I thought I would post this in case other people are looking for a solution so thay can stick with Adobe. Personally I use Nitro Reader.

    Thank you, Fuzzmarks for for the patch link. BruceR's information did fix my problem. After Adobe Reader worked I uninstalled it, and installed PDF Xchange. It is working fine so i just left it and didn't Nitro or Foxit.

    Here's another solution you might try, (and it may eliminate other IE-associated problems): switch to Firefox or Chrome!!!

    Thanks OhNoBills, I have started using Chrome. In the post before this I found the Thanks Button, I think I will start using it.

    Be careful with Chrome and PDF Files. Chrome has a built-in PDF process which displays the PDF File within the browser. Disabling this to use a third-party program (like Nitro or Foxit or PDF XChange) involves doing some digging and editing the Chrome configuration files. For IE or Firefox, this is not a problem, and the third-party PDF programs have plugins for those browsers.
