    How Many Copies of Iexplore.exe?

Running Internet Explorer 9. Recently installed "Do Not Track +" on Firefox and Chrome, but when I tried to install in on Internet Explorer it failed because it could not find "iexplore.exe." Out of curiosity I searched my C drive and found 24 copies (count 'em -24!) of iexplore.exe. How many do I really need and where? They vary in size - 658kb, 679kb, 681kb, and 787kb with dates of 2009-2011. What's the story?

    Thanks!

There will usually be two instances used for the first tab and usually an additional one per tab. They should disappear when you close IE.

He's talking about files, not processes.

Yes, files named "iexplore.exe" in different locations on my C drive. Internet Explorer is not running.

    Sorry, yes, running windows 7.

One file is in "Internet Explorer (C:\Program Files)", another in "Internet Explorer (C:\Program Files (x86))". These seems logical.

All of the others seem to be in C:\Windows\winsxs. In Explorer search results they have really, really long "folder" names starting with either "amd64_microsoft-windows.i.." or "wow64_microsoft-windows-i.."

Hadn't thought that malware would be the issue but will run the two programs you suggested. Otherwise, it does not seem that windows is "broken" and in need of repair.

    Thank you!

To be honest, I wouldn't worry a bit about what goes inside that winsx folder. If you want to read about it, here there is some interesting info. Everything looks ok to me.

Thanks. It just seems wasteful to have an extra 22 copies of a program even if they are small.

They are not really copies, not in the usual sense of a copy of a regular file. That is a system folder, you really shouldn't worry with what goes inside.
