    LInk redirect

Recently I've started to get redirects when I click on a link. As an example, if I go to a website and click on a link within that web page, rather than going to the expected location I'm sent to yp.com or some other advertising web page. This happens infrequently, but probably 2 or 3 times a day. My anti-virus software is current (E-set) and I've scanned the system using three different rootkit detection tools. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks -- I've already done all of the things suggested on teh microsoft site. Interestingly, the first time I clicked on the link I went through a link purporting to be aim-search.net into a link that was flagged by my anti-virus as hosting a trojan. Still looking for a solution, but i appreciate your suggestion.

Jerry - thanks. I have run Malwarebytes but was not aware of super anti-spyware. Downloaded it yesterday and scanned. Found a ton of cookies but nothing else. Deleted everything that was found. Booted this morning and sure as heck, the second time I clicked on a link, I went to an advertising site, not the destination of the link.

When I look at history after one of these redirects, it shows(in reverse order) the url of the site where I currently am. The previous link shows simply as "redirect". The link prior to that shows as www.aim-search.net/?q=sierra%20. This example is after clicking on a link within the Sierra Trading Post site. When I got redirected from the Windows Secrets site, it showed "www.aim-search.net/?q=windowssecrets%20".

Thanks again for your suggestions, but I'm still looking for a solution.

    Other things to look at
Check to see if a proxy server was enabled. Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections. Click on the Lan Settings button. Make sure "Use a proxy server...." is not checked.

click on the IE gear icon and click on Manage Add ons. Disable any add ons you don't use.

Also try using another browser to see if its an IE 8 problem.

    Much appreciated

Thanks for the suggestions. I do not have "proxy server" selected and the problem does occur with Chrome as well. Still looking for a solution, but I appreciate your attention to the problem.

    Dear Scott,

it seems like I would have the same problem. In a German forum I found this answer:
    http://forum.chip.de/viren-trojaner-...e-1619838.html

It seems to be a severe backdoor virus based on a Java exploit. The recommendation is to set up the system again.

I hope this information will help you to identify your problem.

I appreciate the reference to the German information. Now I'll see if Babelfish can translate this for me! And keep those ideas coming -- I really appreciate any suggestions.

Just spend some time with the experts in this field at a malware forum and get it cleaned properly; techsupportforum, majorgeeks, geekstogo ...

You can plug a website address into Google translate to translate the whole page in one go.

That should work. It even auto detects the source page address language by default.

For the link given in the thread above, I found you have to click on it to foolow the redirect and get the page in german. Copy this url and paste it into Google Translate and the page will be translated into English.
