Renaming a picture did not work

Displayed pics from my camera on screen.
Used the large icons option so I could choose items to delete.
Then went to rename the remainder using my standard protocol, as follows, 201201Aimee01.jpg etc
Files reverted to the original file name.
Tried displaying as a list - same behaviour.
    Copied files to thumb drive.
Files on thumb drive permit the rename as above.
Whilst i didn't spend any time analysing possible causes, can anyone offer a uggestion for this behaviour?

    Paul,

Was the camera connected to the computer via cable or did you remove the SD card and place it in a reader? If you were connected via cable I would suspect the camera's software.

    Paul,
Most camera makers recommend transferring pics to a pc for editing but to be deleted using the camera's menu if in it's memory or an SD card.

Thanks RG, that was probably the reason, as I was hurrying to get pics ready for email.
