Can't Save New Files (Word200SR1)

I just started having trouble saving in Word2000SR1. I have racked my brain (be it small & forgetful ) I can not save new word files, I get an erro message that states 'This is not a valid file name. Try one of the following: *Check the path to see it was type correctly. * Select a file from the list of files & folders ( ).'
I have uninstalled Office SR1 3 times still the same problem after reinstall. Tried installing just Word2000 on my NT2000 partition, works as it supposed too...it saves new files.

The other issue is the Excel also won't save other than to a temporary file & it suggests that you open it and save it under another name....this becomes a circle...as it just keeps creating temporary files.

Any suggestions...other than blowing away my WIN98 primary partition and going with NT2000.

Thanks

Phil

Apparently, this can happen when there's too many digits in the path--not to exceed 218. Or if links are in the file that exceed 256 digits.

Re: Can't Save New Files (Word200SR1)

I have read the Microsoft links...have checked my system & I do not have that problem...my directory is D:My Documents. I have also tried saving to the C:, still the same problem.
I have scanned for any viruses with Norton 2002...none. This is really getting to be a real pain, especially when I installed just WORD2000 on my WIN2000 partition and it works fine.

Re: Can't Save New Files (Word200SR1)

Hi Phil:
I'm not sure what the problem is, but is it only new documents that you can't save? Can you save an existing document under a new name...i.e. SaveAs? I'm thinking that you might have a corrupt normal.dot or add-in that's causing the problem.
1. Try locating & renaming normal.dot to normal.old while Word is closed. See if that makes a difference.
2. If not, try starting Word from the command line: Start/Run & type "winword.exe /a", no quotes. This starts Word with a default normal template & no add-ins. See if that works.

Re: Can't Save New Files (Word200SR1)

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your assistance....I tried the Normal.dot suggestion same thing can't save New or Existing file under a new name. I have removed any AddIns still the same issue can't save new or opened existing files under a New name.
I have downloaded an Office cleanup file from Microsoft to remove Reg entries after removing Office2000. I shall try it to see if that helps.

Well I tried removing Office2000 again and then running MSICU.EXE, then reinstall again...same problem. I wonder if it has something to do with WIN98 and the latest Updates from Microsoft?

Getting totally turned off ...maybe Linux...or Sun's StarOffice will be the answer.

Re: Can't Save New Files (Word200SR1)

Hi Phil:

Did you actually try starting Word from the command line with winword.exe /a? The reason I ask is that you can have add-ins in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeStartup, as well as in the Word Startup folder.

A couple of other things come to mind:
1. Check everything with an up to date virus checker. This sounds like a possible variation on the Nimda virus.
2. Are the Excel files read-only, by any chance? You can check in Windows Explorer.
3. There may be some registry corruption, but I'm not sure where to look.

I know it drives you crazy when something happens & you wish you could remember what changes you made recently. If I have a chance, I'll see if I can find any KB articles on this. I checked a few minutes ago & had about 8 or so ready to read & my browser shut down (See. Your not the only one who has problems. ). So I better post this before it crashes again.

Re: Can't Save New Files (Word200SR1)

Hi Again Phil,

Thanks for your help on this problem.

Yes I have tried as you suggested running Word from the run command line with the /a, no luck. I have checked the files for read only attribute....again all OK.
I did the Virus check again...Norton 2002...nothing found.
I am of the opinion that there is something in the Registry that has been set as the Error shows '()' closed brackets at the end implying that the save location is incorrect...even though through the Word Options the Files location is set to D:My Documents. I have even tried just saving to the Root of C: same thing can't save. If I can't solve this in the next week I think I'll do the drastic...FORMAT c: and start fresh .

Phil

Have you gone to the My Documents folder and deleted ALL of the temp files? These will cause all kinds of issues.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Can't Save New Files (Word200SR1)

Hi Dave,

I don't have any temp files in the My Documents folder. I am starting to think it has to be something I installed in the past 2 weeks..but what is the question.
I think I'll have to do a CLEAN House and start from scratch...move on up to WIN2000 at the sametime.

Thanks
Phil
