    Windows Media Player acting up

My Samsung laptop runs Win 7 Pro 32 bit.
Recently WMP stopped working. It won't read CD's and if I use Open with... it flashed something on the screen for a fraction of a second, and that is all.
Troubleshooter gives this message: "Configuration settings might be set incorrectly."
The other error message I sometimes get is: "Server execution failed."
I have tried to disable WMP in the Feature section, rebooted and the enabled WMP again. Still nothing.
Used C-Cleaner for a registry clean.
Tried to download a new copy from website but only got a far a the Windows official site saying it is available on the Windows 7 DVD. The laptop came with Windows pre-installed, I only have a backup CD/DVD.
I am unable to roll back to a previous working point.

What do I do now. To start from scratch would be the last option. There must be a simple way out of this mess.

Yes, I know about VLC and I am using that at present but would like to get WMP beck up again.

    Any ideas? Please.

You may need to do a non destruct repair install with a downloadable version of Windows 7, just ensure that it is a match for bit rate and os version.
Enter your own product key as needed for activation.

As a last resort prior to the non destruct reinstall you may want to check to ensure that these services are set to automatic:
    Media Center Extender Service
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
    Windows Media Center Receiver Service
    Windows Media Center Scheduler Service

    run: "services.msc"

    Thanks Clint

WMP is enabled in the Features list. Then ran "services.msc" with these results:

    Media Center Extender Service
    Shows as Disabled
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
    Shows as Automatic (Delayed Start)
    Windows Media Center Receiver Service
    Shows as Manual
    Windows Media Center Scheduler Service
    Shows as Manual

Where and how do I change these settings? Or are they supposed to be automatic?

You may attempt to enable those services by double clicking and selecting "enable" and "automatic", in an attempt to see whether or not it may correct the issue. Boot the computer after doing so.

Apologies, the "sfc /scannow" command should also be tried.
