    Messenger Pops Up

I've disabled Windows Messenger from launching to my system tray at bootup but it still shows up there at some point later on. Is there any way to uninstall or permanently disable this beast?

Did you try running msconfig, startup switches?

Yes. It's not listed as one of the startup switches (unless it is cleverly concealed). It doesn't launch at startup but gets triggered at some point later on. I haven't yet figured out what triggers it.

probably a setting in OE or Outlook 2002. there is a way to kill it for good. I'll have to look it up in my notes unless Dave beats me to it. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

As I recall, I finally killed it by setting it up completely, then switched it off in msconfig (msmsgs). There is a location reference to registry (? no HK** ?) at 'SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent Version Run'

BTW, MJ, I have MS Money 2002, and it gets triggered on the web any time I visit a 'catalog' store, like Amazon. If you can find a way to kill this, would be very pleased. <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23>

    Re: Messenger Pops Up

The beta testers were editing the inf but i don't have my notes on how to do it handy. Apparently, the run key can get reset and editing the inf stops it for good.

DaveA should know the fix, if not, i'll post it later today when i can gain access to my notes.

I didn't know it did that. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Do you use the tray utility? it may be a setting in there.

BTW - the new <A target="_blank" HREF=http://messenger.microsoft.com/install/dl.asp?typlang=en-us&typsys=0>messenger (v4.5) </A>has net alerts. they're cool, once you get used to them.

No - it does not sit in the tray. I finally killed most of the unwanted Money functions via Tools>Options, but it has been a real beast to tame. Have been using simple MSmoney for years, and each upgrade becomes a new nightmare of exploding services.

BTW, my RC1 has a service running called Network Location Awareness (NLA), but nary a word in help <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Yes, messenger opens when I start Outlook Express. Is there any reason to use messenger? Since I don't do the instant messenger thing, I just consider it an annoyance and would like it not to pop up on my tray.

Another link is the "Passport" thing that MS has made for us. If you log in to your "Passport" account it can get things started.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Messenger Pops Up

    not really, unless you do the IM thing <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

The new net alerts are neat, if you follow the stock market, travel much or buy music. (I'm sure there are more, those are on my WM today.) But there are other ways of getting that information instantly too.

Maybe sure it is disabled in the tools > options dialog.

    Re: Messenger Pops Up

It is disabled in the tools, options dialog and still pops up when I start OE.

    Anyone have a permanent disable?

at start menu > run command line:
    "rundll32 setupapi, InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %SystemRoot%INFmsmsgs.inf"

    or

edit sysoc.inf to remove the "hide" attribute.

    Re Killing Money 2002
I reckon if it fires up on catalog pages, javascript is somewhere in the wings. Try disabling the Active Script options in IE Internet Zone and see if it has an effect.

    Rgds
