Hard-Soft Firewall???

I'm working at setting up a home network with a broadband connection and the Firewall/Router boxes from Linksys and Nexland look attractive. I'm wondering though how they compare to software firewalls like Black Ice in combating the zanies out there?

Thanks for any info you can give.
Thanks,

C DeWitt

Well you can never be too safe. The hardware firewall if setup correctly, will eliminate all unwanted inbound traffic. Use a software firewall (I recomend http://grc.com has a write-up somewhere on his site about the differences between Black Ice and ZoneAlarm.

I use the LinkSys BEFSR41 and Zone Alarm.

Zone Alarm is superior to Black Ice and free for personal use.

As Chris mentioned you need Zone Alarm to protect your outbound traffic. You also need it to protect inbound traffic if you have a system configured in a DMZ (De-Militarized Zone).

All you should need is the LinkSys router, unless you are really paranoid. I have the BEFSR11 and no software. You can check for
vulnerabilities at "www.dslreports.com" They provide both a "Full Security Scan" or a quicker "Port Scan". My system has no reported exposures.

Go to Gibson Research and try the leak test without a software firewall. You will find that you are wide open to a variety of trojans.
