Canon iP4600 printer service error 6C10

This error came out of the blue. When the On button is pressed, the green light flashes and after a time both the Resume button and On button flash alternately. No amount of un and replugging the power and USB cables makes any difference. Drivers reinstalled.

The 6C10 error has been variously described as both a "Reset Canon Printer ink absorber" error or a "Valve Cam Sensor" error. I don't know where the valve cam sensor is located and I've found little info on the net. They say this sensor could be blocked by paper debris but I have no way of telling.

This printer was bought new, has had relatively little use and mainly serves to print CDs/DVDs.

There's a foam strip running almost the full width inside the printer and it looks 95% clean. I don't know if that's the "ink absorber".

There is a button-push sequence designed to place the iP4600 into service mode, where you can reset the ink absorber but so far this has done nothing.

If anyone here has some know how, your input is much appreciated!

This makes me wonder if the ink absorber is the cause of the problem. The ink absorber, which I can see when I lift the ink compartment lid, looks very clean. I don't know if waste ink is able to flow through this foam strip into some kind of reservoir underneath, leaving the strip looking clean. Knowing ink, I somehow doubt it

There are two small containers (roughly a half-inch square) to the right of the long ink strip, with hard foam lids that are gooked up with ink.

Canon keep info about this stuff close to their chest. I've downloaded their simplified service manual but it contains nothing about the error except a brief summary.

Unfortunately, that was all I could find that seemed appropriate. I'm afraid I can't help. Perhaps another Lounger will have an idea.

Is there a Canon dealer in your area that might know something?

The Canon printers ink absorber is a felt pad on the inside bottom of the printer. You have to take the printer apart to replace it. Its a pretty involved procedure, so if the pad is full and a reset doesn't work, you may need a new printer. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYtQxzvru4w for a video on replacing the pad on an IP 3000. The procedure for your printer is similar.
