    Backing up files onto CD's

My 3-year old PC has a CD rom drive which functions well for pre-recorded CD roms. My Computer information shows I have two drives for CD roms: Drive D and Drive E.

I want to backup my system and document files onto a rewritable CD and have inserted a blank CD-RW into the PC. However, when I go into the Microsoft backup program accessed through system tools and click Tools, Media, it indicates that there are no devices. When I look at the properties of Drives C and D in My Computer, it shows that these drives are full and there is no space available - although I have never programmed anything into these drives. Windows Explorer says these devices are "not accessible".

I am completely baffled. Can anyone tell me what is wrong and how I can back up my files to a CD? Do I need special software to backup my files? If so, can you recommend software - hopefully freeware?

    Many thanks

    Sylvia

I suggest you go to the site of the manufacturer of your CD writer and see if they have software/updates. I don't think Windows comes with CD writer software, thus it won't recognize them as an option to write to.

Sylvia, I don't think Msoft's Backup program shows a CD Burner as a backup device and therefore doesn't let you use the Media option. However if you change the backup destination to file, you should be able to select the destination as your burner drive.

I don't like to disagree - but I have ALWAYS used CD-RW for my backups, Drive C is my Hard drive, Drive D is a DVDROM and Drive E is A CD-RW drive - I've got Win98SE and Adaptec CD software. Could it be that you have 2 CD ROM drives <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> does one or both of the drives have a red or orange light on the front labelled "WRITING"? If not - you cannot create CD's on that box.

Re: Backing up files onto CD's

Ed, sorry I obviously didn't make myself clear. When I use Msoft Backup with a Tape Device I see different options down at the bottom left (Where to Backup). If you have what is regarded as a backup device installed such as a tape drive it shows that device where your picture shows the word file. The field below showing the path and filename does not appear in that case. Your picture shows what I was trying to describe - backup to file.

When you use your cdrw as the destination are you able to use the Tools Media option in the Menu as described in the original post??? My understanding and what I was - poorly - trying to describe is that is only for backup devices such as tape drives. Hopefully this is now clearer.

Re: Backing up files onto CD's

I'm no expert and use these boards for answers all the time. Because I'm such a dummy, I made a very simple mistake that gave me the same results you are getting. I didn't format the CD first. When I insert a blank CD in MY burner drive, I have to format it before I can use it for anything. If I forget, I get all kinds of errors, such as The device is not ready.. So, maybe this is too simplistic but...have you formatted the CD?
