Familiar computing products get new capabilities

    BEST HARDWARE
Familiar computing products get new capabilities

    By Michael Lasky

The era of the single-function device is over. Today, it's all about versatility — including the option of operating without a connection to a PC.

A quartet of new products include some novel — and unexpected — capabilities for home and office use.

On your Plextor CD writer review you say you managed to get data from a 32GB memory stick copied to CD in less than a minute.
Considering CD's can only hold about 700MB this is some feat (even DVD's can only hold 4.7GB). Can you clarify this claim please.

Like Clive, I too wondered about the amazing compression capabilities of this drive. Even a DVD drive only holds 4.7 Gigs.

I think the statement was meant to indicate the speed of transfers, not the capacity. USB sticks are normally very slow on data transfers. Plextor's device seems to handle these devices reasonably quickly. That's all I got out of that statement. Granted, it could have been phrased better.

The exact statement was "moving data from a completely full 32GB flash drive to a CD took less than a minute". I, too, questioned validity of this statement, and have written the author for an explanation.
