Question Image backups... how do they do that?

I was always under the impression that to make make an image backup one had to boot off a alternate medium. How can MS Backup (for instance) make an accurate image of a running system?

    Fiz,

It's done using a windows feature called Volume Shadow Copy Service.

Sorry, my bad, I was thinking more on the technical side. I'm having trouble visualizing how separate but related memory locations stay relavent during the whole time the image is being created.
