Win7 INVASIVE HIPER MS PROBLEM; chopped windows (MS:DESTROYER OF APPS)
. new notebook with Win7/SP1 32bit
Known good Hardware/Software
. existing notebook with Win7 32bit
Symptoms (worst to least)
. Quicken 2009/cash flow pop-up window
vertically chopped off TOP&BOTTOM; no way to drag or resize
(tho window is fixed size and ONLY works correctly @ 1024x768 res)
UN-ABLE TO DO DATA ENTRY for Income/Expenses as bottom button N/A!!!
. POP Peeper (email viewer)
sub-windows sized wrong; some (but not all) text fields' font wrong?
status bar and left window buttons had bigger text (1/3rd bigger?)
config sub-window chopped off at bottom, tho resizing main window
showed it all
. WinDbg (yep: MS's own program!)
sub-windows' font wrong (again maybe 1/3rd bigger)
THIS WAS THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLE: COURE.fon
View/Font: on old machine, Courier/Regular/10 was available
on new machine, the minimum size was 12(!), not 10
Attempts to fix
. WAY TOO MANY TO LIST AND/OR REMEMBER
. adjusted resolution, themes, DPI scaling, personalization, Clear Text,
program compatability, fonts, etc
ControlPanel/Display/adj res: YELLOW TRIANGLE EXCLAMATION saying:
'If your resolution is below 1024 x 768, some items may not fit on
the screen.' This does NOT(!!!) appear on the old machine!
===>>> IS THIS MS's ANSWER TO THIS INVASIVE PROBLEM?!
Post-doc: after implementing the below solution, this no longer appears.
. temp installed possible promising KB fixes via WinUpd
I could ramble on about the WEEK spent trying to resolve this, but when all
the clues (ie: PROCMON, WinDbg, gut feeling, etc) pointed to COURE.fon, that
led me to this URL via Google that RESOLVED(!!!) all 3 of my problems:
WINDOWS 7 FONT SIZE BUG
Basically, when going from 125% to 100% screen size, Windows "forgets" to put
back 3 fonts, which the above 3 apps use. A simple registry change and re-boot
corrects this problem. Now the 3 apps work the same on both the old&new machines.
As far as I'm concerned, this should be a HIPER (ie: "VIP") fix from MS,
yet my perusal of the fixes WinUpd presented to me (APR20,2012) didn't seem to
address this INVASIVE PROBLEM, which really surprises me! If anyone knows the
KB fix # (IF IT EVEN EXISTS!), please post it!
