    QR code location finder

Not sure if this group can answer this, but will give it a try.

Can a QR (Quick Response) barcode be used to show store locations close to a customer.
In other words if I scan a QR code with my smartphone is there a program that will say I am two miles from the closest store location with is located at "address".

Not sure if that makes sense, but will toss it to the group for question and/or possible answers.

    Thanks in advance,

Mainly Android, but also interested in Apple.
Looking for one that would help in advertising a store.

As I understand QR codes, they hold passive data, specifically a web address. You should be able to put a program at the web address that would look up the location in the phone and show nearby stores. There could be apps that do the same thing.

If you use the QRCode generator from Microsoft, then you can insert text, picture, or url.
    Thanks John

    Agreed.

You should consider the QR code to be just like a barcode (a number), but with the possibility to contain other constant value types (URL, image, text).

So, what you are looking for is an app that scans the QR, contacts a web service (related to the QR) and submits the phone's location parameters to it.
The content in the QR would then be the web server address and the related store information (f.i. QR=URL:http://mywebserver.com/AddressesOfDIYStores.php)
(Technically speaking, you do not need a web server if you would design an app that keeps all known addresses on the phone, but that is usually not the preferred way as it makes updating the addresses more difficult)
