    'Nervous' Desktop Icons

What causes the desktop icons to randomly rearrange themselves? Sometimes they are scattered all over the desktop and sometimes they are all bunched in a corner. When you move the mouse pointer to try and click on one, it jumps around, and you have to "chase" it down! The O/S is Windows 98. Anyone know of a cause and solution for this problem?????

Sounds something like the Magistr virus, I'm afraid.

    From <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.kaspersky.com/news.asp?tnews=0&nview=1&id=169&page=0>Kaspersky</A>:
"Depending on the internal triggers, the virus also executes yet another payload subroutine that invokes the "runaway icons" effect: if a user tries to point the cursor to a desktop icon, the icon immediately changes its location so the user cannot start the correspondent application"

    More info also from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/magistr.shtml>F-Secure</A>
