Win7/SP1 EXTREMELY LOW WINDOWS SYSTEM SOUNDS

    Hardware/Software
    . new SONY VAIO VPCYB33KX/B notebook with Win7/SP1 32bit
    . Realtek Audio ver 6.0.1.6167

    Known good Hardware/Software
    . existing HP notebook with Win7 32bit
    . different audio adapter

    Symptoms
    . all but 1 Windows System sounds are EXTREMELY LOW;
have to crank VOLUME to 100% to barely even hear them.
Windows Startup sound is OK; my own .wav files are OK.
. all run normally on the other machine

    Available
. wmplayer.exe 'graphic equalizer' makes "UAC.wav" almost the same as "Windows Startup".wav
    HOWEVER, SysTray/Volume/Sounds NOT affected!
. PROCMON trace from start to finish via SysTray Volume/Sounds/Sounds:

. Download&installed an AWESOME PRODUCT: VU Meter

    http://windows-vu-meter.software.informer.com/1.2/

    C:\>dir /s /a /x "vu meter.exe" (ver 1.2.1.0)
Volume in drive C has no label.
    Volume Serial Number is 808F-39BF

    Directory of C:\Users\QCD2\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\XJ80357N.DLQ\ BC1GJQH8.7QC\vum
    e..tion_232b8c7f0887a126_0001.0002_0a699e448c53f03 7

    Made DeskTop shortcut.

    THIS IS VERY COOL!!!

INDEPENDENT(!!!) of the SysTray VOLUME slider!!!

Be aware that the install is very quiet; no instructions or notifications.
There may also be a slight problen with it:

System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range.

    Solution
    FINALLY FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    http://www.ehow.com/how_12145121_can-computer-increase-volume-sound-everything-turned-max.html

    Vol/Playback/Speakers/Enhancements:
. use VU Meter to SEE(!) effects of changes (confirmed what my ears were telling me)
    . vol slider @ 60%
    . all enhancements OFF; VU Meter for UAC.wav @ 10/3% (L/R)
LET ME REPEAT: 3% (THREE PERCENT on R channel) !
    . set 'loudness equalization' ON; now UAC.wav @ 65/35% !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    . set equalizer (new) to MAX; now UAC.wav @ 80/50% !!!!!

So, I went from 10/3% to 80/50% by merely selecting 'loudness equalization' !!!

CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S AMAZING THAT THIS IS NOT ON BY DEFAULT!!!

I did not think I had a problem as my Windows volume was set to around 50% and was fairly loud at that level. However when I went to video and some sites with flash on the internet, I would get blasted out by the volume. I often would have to move the volume slider in the video way down. By using the setting you spoke of, I was able to lower my Windows volume which lowered the internet volume. Now both are a little more balanced.

    Ah, I see.

Since this problem is important to each of us, tho for opposite reasons,
perhaps MS should rename the effects' name from 'LOUDNESS EQUALIZATION'
to 'LOWER SYSTEM SOUNDS', since that would help us decide what to set it to.
Perhaps then, I would have found it quicker during my search. Thkx.
