Constant WI-FI signal in car while traveling

Hello,

My son is interesting in getting an ipod touch so he can text his friends for free using the apps provided and to use the internet. The only problem is that the ipod touch only works with WI-FI and when we are traveling on vacation this summer in the car, he won't have the ability to use it.

My question...is there a way to create a WI-FI environment in our car so this will work? Is there a device we can plug into the car?

We have a 2012 Chevy Equinox which already has OnStar and bluetooth. Is it possible the the vehicle already has a WI-FI signal?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TMG,

Most wi-fi has a range of about 350 ft. Not very practical while traveling. If you have an android phone there is an app {FoxFi} that will convert it into a wi-fi hotspot, as long as you have a cell signal, but of course this is going to use your data plan data allotment.

You can get a portable wifi unit, but you pay for the data. Probably much cheaper to text - he'll have to get a job to pay for his habit. ;-))
