    Modem "chimes"

    Hi all:

I've got a Speedtouch modem and it has recently begun to intermittently and unpredictably make a sound that's similar to a "You've got e-mail" type chime.

    It's driving me batty!

Has any one else heard of this? Any ideas as to the cause?

    TIA,
    ~marilyn

Does it do that when you are using it?

Yes it does, but I don't think it does it when the computer is off.

Modems do make noise when they are being used. I haven't used one for a few years now, but last time I did, they were noisy.

Not sure I understood the computer being off part?

    Hi Rui:

This is not a 'machine noise' - and modems these days aren't very noisy at all, not like back in the 90s when you had to leave the room sometimes or risk losing your teeth. This is a lovely 'chime' like a doorbell or something - it's very similar to a sound I've heard on windows for mail and things.

    I think it's ST516 v6.

I hope that's right - there are so many numbers and they are *so* small.

Look into your 'sound' settings and see what sounds you have active test till you find the one that makes the sound you hear and select none for that action.

This is an ADSL modem. These are a bit quieter . The modem manual is accessible here.

    Hi you two:

Thanks for the good ideas. I'll try them and see what the manual says.

Being a Windows person, I unplugged the darn thing to see if that would maybe reset something - or something.

If none of these things work, I'll be back.

    Thanks again.
