files backed up in XP transferrable to 7?

If I back up files in XP, can I transfer to win7? My pc is hinky now. When I turn on PC, sounds like its turning on then off. I may need a new pc now instead of next year.

    Hello....could you supply more information?

    1. How are you planning to backup files? What method...Image or copy and which program.

    2.What files...OS or other?

    3. Where are you going to place the "backup" External HD or DVD's etc. Regards Fred

various files. Quicken, Skyrim, some pictures. I currently have XP SP 3 and getting win 7. I assume the Passport drive has a windows-like OS.

    infael,
Hello... I would backup the whole OS ...everything, using this program (free) Macrium Reflect Then as well use "Macrium Reflect" to backup seperatly the other files. This way you would be "Triple" covered in the event something should go wrong... Macrium Image of your XP , your copied files, and the Macrium copies of your files ...You could then also "Dual Boot" XP on your new "box" If you wanted to. Regards Fred
