MFC can only scan but not print, Windows 7 only sees it as a scanner

    Hi all,

My Kyocera FS-1028 USB MFC was working fine up until two weeks ago when for no apparent reason it disappeared from my list of printers and only appears as a FS-1028MFP scanner, and works fine as that scanner.

If I disconnect and reconnect, it doesn't change - just the scanner appears on the hardware list.

Any ideas on what's happened, and how to re-instate the printer?

The PC is 3 months old and the FS-1028 is fully supported by Win 7 according to Kyocera.

    Thanks

    Did you update the driver?

Do you have the most current drivers installed?

    Yes I did.
I downloaded the latest All-in-one driver (ClassicUniversalPCLcertified.zip) for Win7 from here
    http://www.kyoceradocumentsolutions.co.uk/index/products/download_centre.false.driver.FS1028MFP._.EN.html
but Windows refuses to see it as a printer any more. Being a USB device it should just be seen as an MFP.

I was wondering it is a hardware fault with the unit?

    Thanks

It is possible there is a hardware issue.

Have you used Device Manager to delete all the related devices, uninstalled the drivers, and let Windows rediscover the device?

    Hi Joe,

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have removed it from Device Manager and re-scanned ... same issue, Windows only thinks it's a scanner, albeit the correct model.

I've seen this before a few years ago on XP, and I ended up junking the MFP as I couldn't resolve it. I was hoping there would be more diagnostics in Win7 , or was more resilient to driver issues - or at least a way to prove it has a hardware fault so I don't waste much more time on it.

    Thanks

Unfortunately, Windows 7 like all operating systems is dependent on drivers. The drivers provide the interface to the device and expose all its features to be used by the OS.

BTW, in Device Manager did you display hidden devices too?

    Hi again,

I've got access to this Pc again now and I did forget to display Hidden Devices the first time - thanks for the reminder Joe - and yes, it DID show the Kyocera as a printer in Device Manager, however it stubbornly refuses to show up in the list of Printers, only as a Scanner - so I can't print to it.

    I'm still flummoxed!
