47.554 gigs in my Vista laptop: too many!

I don' install pictures, video or sound and didn't install MS office and it keeps growing.

I use malwarebytes & CCleaner and have Microsoft Security Essentials running but the downloads folder is empty..... and don't understand this.

Has anyone ever used the black viper vista thing (that I found) to install or get Vista a little slimmer?

The BlackViper settings will do nothing for your disk space usage. All those are for is to help decide what services to run when your system boots. What is the size of the HD?

Use a tool such as WinDirStat to see where the disk space is being used.

If you really have 47 TB of disk space on your laptop, I can't see why you should be worried about a few odd files!

It is using about 33% of available space. I would not worry until it is using 75-80% especially as you do not use any pictures or videos, etc.

Is hibernate enabled. The hiberfil.sys file sometimes gets pretty large (3 to 5 GB is fairly common) To disable hibernate.

Ted - the hyberfil.sys file is created by Windows exactly the same size as the installed RAM! (Up to the maximum usable, of course...)

As a noob i found that getting rid of most of the system restore points gained a lot of disk space there is an easy way to do this in vista os which deletes all but the last few restore points, i can't remember how i did it, but i am sure others can point you in the right direction, well worth a try!

My first run in with Vista showed 50 Gb used when only 25 was used.
Another pc I found 60 Gb of shadow storage filling 110 Gb hard drive.
A little googling found how to resize shadow storage - sorry I do not
have a link to it -- it is easy to find. I now resize all Vista systems.
Some have no limits. Also I generally reduce space allocated to restore
to under 2 Gb, not the 12% default. SP1 did help with shadow storage.

Your comment "I can't remember how I did it" brought to mind the tool that does it. Open up the Disk Cleanup tool. Near the bottom, click on "Clean up System Files." A new window opens. Click on the "More Options" tab - and then in that window you will see the option to remove older System Restore & Shadow copies.
