Transfering Word Prefs to other computers

    Hi.

How do I copy prefs such as the QuickAccess Toolbar configuration, styles, AutoCorrect, and keyboard equivalents from one computer to another?

    Thanks.

The Quick action toolbar settings are in a .qat file. Copying this file overwrites existing settings at the destination computer.

Keyboard shortcut customizations (as well as macros and AutoText) are stored in templates. Normal.dotm is the default storage location. Normal.dotm should never be a shared file. Copying this file overwrites existing settings at the destination computer.

    AutoCorrect settings are:
    1) Language specific
    2) Stored in .acl files (unformatted entries) and normal.dotm
    3) best copied using a macro.
The macro for Word 97-2003 can be found at How can I import and export all my AutoCorrect entries, so they can be transferred to another machine?.
The macro for later versions can be downloaded from Jay Freedman's site at:
How to Move (Copy) AutoCorrect Entries from One Computer to Another in Word 2007 (2010)
You should read the page for the earlier version even if downloading the later version. Both of these macros copy your AC entries into a Word table. Then you run a separate macro on the new computer with the table and reload them into the new computer.

The best way to transfer settings stored in templates (and qat settings) is by using a custom global template. The qat settings can be stored in that template if you modify the XML. See Customize the Ribbon (It doesn't take rocket science). QAT settings are discussed in http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/word_tip_p...tom_icons.html
