    VLOOKUP Limitation (XL2000)

I was just asked a question and could not find an answer for it and so I submit it to the board for resolution. An engineer is using a VLOOKUP function to return data from one workbook to another. The function works fine until he tries to return data from the 70th column when the function returns #REF. It works fine for any column 69 and below.

    the function is written:
    =VLOOKUP($A$2,'November 01 Daily 14 Report.xls'!Daily_Data,70)

I looked through various Excel books, this board, Microsoft Search and have found no mention of any limitations to this function. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: VLOOKUP Limitation (XL2000)

    Hi Brent,
There certainly aren't any specific columnar limitations on it - I can do VLOOKUPs and return data from the 128th column quite happily. Is there definitely a 70th column in the source data (might be worth checking that the range name does refer to all the expected data)? VLOOKUP does return #REF if the column value is not within the lookup area?
    Hope that helps.

Thanks Rory for the information...the data range was not in fact all inclusive. I have corrected this and the function works just fine. I am so ashamed.

    Hey, we've all been there. I usually realise just after I hit the Submit button... <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
