fixing normal.dot (95 97 98 2000)

I have had normal.dot attacked by virus in the past.
If hackers can do that, shouldn't I be able to make changes to normal.dot to make it the way it should have been?

I would like to get rid of the default 10 point times roman font and make it 12 point courier. But that selection is greyed out.

Is there some way to write VB or otherwise edit normal.dot so that hideous fuzzy tiny times roman font is replaced by something that is larger and more legible as the default?

I suppose I could sue microsoft for violating the ADA law but I would rather just tweak my normal.dot.

IT IS NECESSARY TO FIX THE ORIGINAL. MAKING A NEW TEMPLATE LEAVES THE DEFAULT 10 PT TIMES ROMAN AND IT TURNS ITSELF ON AT ANNOYING TIMES.

PEOPLE WILL NOT FOLLOW THE RULES AND USE THE TEMPLATE ANYWAY. THEY USE THE CRAPPY DEFAULT 10PT TIMES ROMAN WHICH IS AESTHETICALLY HIDEOUS AND IS HARD TO READ.

PLEASE. HOW DOES ONE FIX NORMAL.DOT? IF HACKERS CAN DO IT WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT FOR GOOD PURPOSES.

Note: the option for the default is grayed out. I cannot just change it and save it over the old normal.dot using the usual means.

You should be able to open "normal" template and make all the chnges that you want. But if some one has protected it, you may not be able to. What version are trying to change at this time?

I have been able to make changes to this template for ALL versions of Word that I have used. I have been using Word and/or Office since Word 2.0 and have not missed a upgrade.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

yes you *should* be able to
but in *all* versions of word
the *default paragraph font* is grayed out to 10 pt times roman
even if you have a different normal font
that default will come to life when you dont want it to

we need a way to fix our only copy of normal.dot to change the default to 12 point courier not 10pt times roman

there has to be a way to hack normal.dot or to add a VB macro
to undo that abomination of a default

Could you close Word, delete your normal.dot, then restart Word to have a new one load?

Re: fixing normal.dot (95 97 98 2000)

sorry no that does not work

take any document or template
even an original normal.dot

do format style and pick DEFAULT PARAGRAPH

it is GRAYED OUT
and you cannot change it

I need a way around the gray out that MS imposed
so we can remove that hideous font as default that they inflicted on us

times roman was designed to pack the max text on a page
and has no redeeming values
it is unaesthetic, hard to read, and the msword version is also fuzzy and tracked way too tight.

To change the font, go to format, style, double click on "normal" and edit the font from there. You cannot change it in DEFAULT PARAGRAPH.

Are you saying that you open a blank page in Word, and cannot change the font, right there in broad daylight.

If you can change the font in a word doc, you can setup a blank page to your liking, then 'save as' a template, then swap names until you get it in the proper directory as normal.dot.

I am saying that *nobody* can change the *DEFAULT* font
by normal means

try it

NOT NORMAL - DEFAULT
we can change normal
but default comes back to bite us

and some people will not choose normal
we need to default them to *our* font not the one MS used

i could
but that would not do anything for the problem]

we need to set a different *default* not normal font

Re: fixing normal.dot (95 97 98 2000)

You are using "default" in two different ways. The font that comes up when Word starts out of the box is TNR, 10pt. You CAN change that, as other posters have said.

The "default paragraph font" IS the font of the underlying paragraph. By definition, you can't change that.

Do this:
1. Press Ctrl+D (or go to Format/Font).
2. Change the Font from TNR to Courier (assuming it's installed on your computer).
3. Change the size to whatever you want.
4. Now click on the "default" button in the lower left corner (Word 97) or wherever you find it.
5. Answer "yes" to the question.
6. OK your way out of the dialog box.
7. Close Word & if it says there are changes to the normal template, answer "yes".

Now your default font is changed.

Re: fixing normal.dot (95 97 98 2000)

we have a failure to communicate
probably due to microsofts terminology

format
style
in the box there are a lot of things that can be changed
one of them is normal font
on that cannot be is DEFAULT PARAGRAPH FONT
scroll up and see the symbol next to it
click on it
and see that all the options are grayed out

it will require a different way to change the default para font
than the toc headers normal and other choices

the normal font may be "default" in some sense but the
ms default paragraph font 10 pt times roman will kick in at
random and change the document

besides we cannot get users to pick the normal font
they are too dumb
they use the default and get the wrong font

Re: fixing normal.dot (95 97 98 2000)

whomper,

Please read those posts a little more thoroughly. What these nice people are trying to tell you is that Default Paragraph Font does not really exist on its own. Notice the C in front of it--that means it's a character style. Say there are two words in a paragraph that are styled differently from the rest. Default Paragraph Font will make those words the same as the rest of the paragraph. That's it. That's what it's for.

If you change the format for Normal and save it in Normal.dot, then any new files will start out with that as the Default Paragraph Font. If it's still defaulting to 10 pt Times, then so is Normal.

Your dumb users don't need to select Normal--it's just there. If you follow Phil's instructions and it still doesn't work on new documents, then maybe there are multiple versions of Normal.dot or something.

Re: fixing normal.dot (95 97 98 2000)

i think we still have a communications problem
there is no "c" in front of it when i look
where are you looking at it at?
i am looking in the box that says style
after i do format / style /
there is a solid triangle/arrow pointing to a small "a" with an underline followed by default paragraph font
but there is no "c"

no matter what or how i change
and i have deleted *all* files with the word normal in them
and rebooted before attempting to fix the initial normal.dot

i can change normal font
i can change most everything

i cannot change the style listing for default paragraph font
AND THIS FONT WILL COME TO LIFE ON ITS OWN WHEN we edit a document.

we want to rip times roman out of our machines and delete every reference to it
but we cannot get rid of the default paragraph font in the style

and if it did not spring to life when it was not wanted we would not care but it comes back and bites us

there must be some magic VB incantation to change this just like that bleeping paper clip

i have tried the recommendations made here
but they do NOT do what the suggester thinks they do
when i do them on my machine

i still think folks are confusing the style named default with the generic word default. if i am missing something simple please try to explain it in a different manner. i do not see nor get the results others think should occur.

Could you attach a document to show what is happening because what you have said so far makes no sense whatsoever.
