    Where did the saying 'The Whole Nine Yards' originate ???

    The complete quote is "...(someone) gave him/it the whole nine yards". It refers to the length of the ammunition belt that is installed in the fighter airplanes of the WWII era. A pilot was, and still is, to follow down his adversary that he is about to get a confirmed kill for. He had the option of firing all 27 feet of the ammo belt at it as he followed it into the ocean/ground.
    9 yards= 27 feet

    Well Batcher, it seems that the article you reference makes my definition credible being it only came into use after WW2..
