A confusing mix of .NET Framework updates

    PATCH WATCH

A confusing mix of .NET Framework updates

    By Susan Bradley

The halfway point between Patch Tuesdays is a good time to revisit those .NET updates I love so much.

I typically anticipate .NET update problems, and this week .NET came through with a detection glitch that reminded me how much I truly don't love patching this platform.

The full text of this column is posted at windowssecrets.com/patch-watch/a-confusing-mix-of-net-framework-updates/ (opens in a new window/tab).

Columnists typically cannot reply to comments here, but do incorporate the best tips into future columns.

Ms Bradley recommends installing 2604114 .net update for Windows 7. Can I assume that this recommendation includes 2604115, which MS lists as being the same update for Windows 7 sp1?

I have a question about updates I haven't been able to resolve on the Microsoft web site. Secunia Software Inspector says I'm missing an update to Excel 2010. It says I'm running version 14.0.6106.5005. I looked for and found the latest update for Excel 2010 and when I tried to apply it the update process said it's already installed.

    Do you have a solution?

Secunia's detection schemes are not perfect. Ignore the Secunia warning on this one, if you are sure the updates have all installed and are not being reoffered.

    Annoying update loop - (KB2572073) (KB2633880)(KB2518864)

    XPSP3
    Annoying loop of updates
    (KB2572073) (KB2633880)(KB2518864)

    Unfortunately I have updated KB 2604092 (MS12-035).

    Susan Bradley says:
    MS12-035 (2604092)
Some old .NET updates come back to haunt us
On May 21, I started getting reports that three older .NET updates — (KB 2518864 (MS11-044), KB 2572073 (MS11-078), and KB 2633880 (MS12-016) — were being offered over and over again or repeatedly reinstalled on Windows XP and Server 2003 SP2 systems.

As it turns out, the problem wasn't with these three updates; it was caused by an installation problem with KB 2604092 (MS12-035), a critical .NET 2.0 fix. The patch was republished on May 22 with what Microsoft cryptically calls a "detection change."

Microsoft isn't saying what was wrong with MS12-035. It states in the bulletin's FAQ only that if it's installed, you do not need to install it again on Windows XP and Server 2003 SP2 systems. Nor has Microsoft explained why, when KB 2604092 was pulled to fix the detection issue, the three older .NET updates suddenly reappeared on computers set to download updates automatically.

Based on postings in a Windows Answers forum, some Microsoft customers are understandably upset about the constant issues with .NET updating.

What to do: If you're running Windows XP, take a pass on KB 2604092 (MS12-035) until we're sure there are no more problems with it.

    Should I delete 092?

    Subsequent to original post:
    5/26/12 3:34 PM
Attempted to download (KB2572073) (KB2633880)(KB2518864) for the upteenth time.
    Download
Turn off PC with update shield
Watch PC download 3 updates and shutoff
Review Add/Remove programs under .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
DID NOT DOWNLOAD. I checked other .net sections and no download.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks.

I'm running Vista. In this month's updates or last month's I received a lot of .NET updates that did have check marks but two more were not check marked and Susan Bradley's Patch Watch did not mention them. So, I didn't install them but they are still hanging around and still not checked. I have gone ahead and installed all the other .NET updates with no problem and I'm wondering why these two updates are there but not checked and why the Patch Watch did not mention them when they first appeared? They are KB2656368 and KB2656374.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Bill,

Both KB2656368 and KB2656374 are part of MS12-025, which Susan Bradley discussed in the newsletter of 23 May. I gather that the recommendation is to keep it on hold until Microsoft sorts out the problems.

    Everyone --

Please note in addition that at least three .NET patches issued by MS Updates to Windows XP users on May 22, 2012 have been withdrawn. these patches should not cause any future issues. But for those who got them through Automatic Updates, there is at least one Lounge Thread on what to do now, and AskWoody.com has several useful pieces of advice as well.

Thanks mo.eu! My two numbers were not actually listed in the 23 May newsletter but you are right they were tied to it. It turns out they were listed in the 12 April newsletter. However they have not been listed in the Patch Watch Chart and that is very confusing. I just look at the KB numbers, not the MS12-25 type of numbers.

    Thanks for solving my problem.

I've been holding on KB 2604092 (MS12-035) ever since Patch Watch 5/23/12 when Susan Bradley wrote:

I tune into every edition of Patch Watch but have not seen an update to this...did I miss it, or are those of us running Windows XP still waiting for the green light?

You didn't miss an update. It fell into Patch Watch oblivion like so many others:

I guess we may never know if Susan is sure there are no more problems with it or not, which doesn't quite meet the implied expectation.

I am still waiting on 2604092. A site search did not yield anything recent. Is this a go?

As it hasn't achieved notoriety or corrections in over a year I think you should just install it.
