    Colors are wrong!

OK, when this first happened on my desktop, I thought it could be the video card. Not. Then I thought it was the monitor...but it happened on my daughter's [Dell Inspiron] laptop too, so that was out.

Now it is the same on my HP dv7 laptop -- and it's brand new.

    What is "it"?

If I set the colors for "Selected Items" to bright white [letters] on any color [background] -- blue/red/whatever -- in all explorer -- shell? -- related programs, the colors show up as black letters on the background chosen.

I cannot BELIEVE I am the only one that has seen this, so it has to be some setting somewhere that is not right. Three different [brand] machines, same Windows.

From whom/where could I possibly find out what is doing this?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    RR;

I show the "pick" of the colors at the top, and the "actual" at the bottom.

    Chuck,
Why not try the 'Windows Classic' theme & compare it with my settings in my .docx file, just changing the ones that are different from the default ones on your pc. If you don't like it, just delete the theme instead of saving it.

    RR:

I'll try. I'll see if, like getting a corrupted user file, it's possible to have a corrupted them. But that really doesn't make sense either, since the same exact thing has happened on three machines.

    Sigh...

Xircal, thanks. I have been setting those options now for some time. It's nit the settings, for, as the pic showed, the settings are all there, and work in *all programs except explorer*.

I set the "Selected Items" to white letters on red. It looks fine there when I set it, and fine in all programs that are not tied into explorer.

I had this setting for years without issue, and even in Windows 7. Then all of a sudden it was fakakta, and haven't been able to fix it since -- on ANY of the machines [3 now] that I tried.

If Windows doesn't want to allow that setting any more, why have it as a choice?!

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Hi Chuck,

I noticed in your screenshot that you have "Selected items" showing in the top dropdown menu. Try changing that to "Desktop".

EDIT: Just a quick thought. Leave it as "Selected items", but change the font color to "Black" (even though it's black already).

Tried that. Went black [actually was already] fine, stayed black when I changed it -- to ANY other color -- again, but only in "shell-based" programs. Any other file manager, for instance, shows white on red for the selected item. Explorer shows black on red.

    Try doing the following.

    1. Click Start and in the Search field at the bottom, type CMD to get a command prompt.
    2. Right click the link and choose "Run As Administrator"
    3. Type: net user administrator /active:yes and hit Enter
    4. Reboot and you'll see the hidden Administrator account when you logon. The password is blank by default, so just hit Enter to boot to the desktop.
    5. Make the appropriate changes once more and then open a command prompt again.
    6. Type: net user administrator /active:no and hit Enter to disable the Admin account again.
    7. Reboot again and see if it changes anything.

    Yes, it changes dynamically.

What I suggest you do is to delete the account you have now using the Administrator account and create another one. You should get the default theme back again and can then make adjustments via the "Appearances and Personalization" control panel.

You know what's totally strange? I started out with a new system, let alone a new account...and ended up with the same problem -- on, now, THREE machines. How the heck can that possible be?
