    Windows 7: Spurious Cursor

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T500 running Windows 7 Ultimate fully updated with a problem with the cursor being displayed.

The cursor changes for no apparent reason to one of various cursors depending on the action state of the computer. Here is one of the spurious cursors:

Has anyone seen this sort of cursor or have any idea where it comes from?

Sometimes when this cursor appears, and I can't identify any specific action the causes it to come and go, the screen breaks up and then resets itself.

Looking for suggestions and a solution.

    Cheers

    Trevor
