Waking a computer on a network

I have a tower computer in my basement workshop, and a laptop upstairs. I hate having to run downstairs to wake my tower, then running back upstairs. Can you show me how to wake my tower from my laptop? Both are running Win 7 and are on a wireless network.

The simple answer is no, because Wake on LAN is a wired-only function, requiring the Network Interface Card (NIC) to stay powered up, waiting for the WOL "Magic Packet".

The more complicated answer is that there is a newer facility available only for Windows 7 called Wake on Wireless LAN (WoWLAN), but I've not yet tried it, and so I would suggest you invoke the services of Mr Google. There may even be some intrepid person on the Windows Secrets Lounge who has played with it?

If the WoWLAN doesn't work just plug your tower into the switch and use WOL, that option works for sure.
