There was so much uproar when the what now appears to be incorrect information came out that I figured something had to be wrong. There are just too many conventional PC's in use to totally give up on Desktop apps.

It was correct information at the time. Microsoft acquiesed to the developer community and changed direction.

Just goes back to the fact that MS does listen to feedback. They are not the inflexible monster many try to make them out to be. One of the reasons they released Win 8 Beta OS's to such a wide group of testers was to get the feedback. Everyday people will have a much different experience with Win 8 than those commonly considered qualified beta testers. Some of this experience was good, some very bad. MS wanted this feedback.

They also wanted to get a large group of people "playing" with this very new and very different OS. The more people that have some experience with Win 8, the better the chance it will succeed when it's released for sale.
